The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in employing video review technology.
Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.
Athletes will gain the option to question specific rulings from the official, echoing the protocol already in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
The new system will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This step follows just a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review specific decisions, including:
- Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
- Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there is no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can initiate.
Case in Point
A recent example took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined the player was responsible for interference, granting the point to his opponent.
Growing Trend
Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.
Further Updates
Another innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was out or in.
Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
