Users Stopping Slimming Jabs Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that individuals who stop using new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users purchasing these drugs need to be cognizant of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a reversion to starting weight in about one and a half years.

Weighing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically have a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the heightened rebound.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this medication means appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Issue?

The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals argue that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have come off the medication describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"It was like a switch that goes on and you become ravenous," recalled one woman.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Widespread Use

Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts stress that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits relies on combined lifestyle support.
