The US Justice Department has officially joined a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, seeking to prevent the state's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, filed in a US district court, challenges the map supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that violates voting rights and undermines the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will survive legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and they are likely to also lose in court," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge claims that California's map improperly used racial considerations to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in contravention of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," stated a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation constitutes the major counterpunch by Democrats in the continuing political battle that began in Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed public consent, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to gain just a handful of Republican-held House seats to take control of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the majority will influence the remaining period of the sitting president's term, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its agenda or face resistance, investigations and possible further challenges.
