The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

We present a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy horror films: Get comfortable with your loved one and view Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like conventional body horror, but beneath Together resides a intense contemplation about the ways we decide to love each other.

An Introductory Film Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together marks the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for a decade. Having wed in real life in 2017, the two stars bring a unique chemistry to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The story begins when Millie and Tim transition from the urban environment to the countryside for Millie’s job. A familiar narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the tropes conclude. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their country house, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim fall into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity begins influencing the couple. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The complete narrative is a methodically building horror experience, blending elements of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components neatly and delivers them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they deftly portray countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and distant from his social circle. He is terrified of the notion of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he refrains from painting one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

Both characters grapple with the type of challenges that come with long-term unions over a long period. Deep down, they have affection for each other. They find humor with each other, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these fears of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to another person, the metaphor does not come across as clumsy or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that single viewers have understood the narrative as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Conversely, some couples experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could act as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion plant anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply look at your partner and say, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can experience at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu now.
