Space Traveler Shares Mental Health Struggle After Deluge of Backlash Following Journey
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her emotional downturn after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
The 34-year-old activist – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight earlier this year, which also included high-profile passengers.
The high-profile flight was widely scrutinized by some, who challenged its value and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, recalling a phone call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the flight.
She portrayed the news reports and online discourse as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Buried Under Misogyny
The researcher, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and operated research during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – including her scientific research and years of training to the historic significance of her background – was drowned out under the deluge of gendered attacks.
She is widely recognized for her pioneering work championing the cause of victims of sexual violence.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was deferred after being assaulted during her university years, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
The Fog Begins to Lift
Now, eight months after fulfilling her dream, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose support were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she affirmed.
She concluded that even with the backlash, considerable good had come out of the flight, including increased focus on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.
The Historic Journey
The self-operating New Shepard rocket launched from its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a 11-minute journey that passed the edge of outer space.
The diverse crew also comprised leaders in different industries.
The venture behind the flight is a private space firm launched by a Amazon founder.
