Chelsea tactician Enzo Maresca remarked that the run-up to the weekend's triumph against Everton represented "the toughest 48 hours" of his tenure at Stamford Bridge.
The Italian delivered a somewhat cryptic message in his post-match press conference even after notching a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge courtesy of finishes from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto.
Those crucial points lifted Chelsea once again into the English top flight's top four, potentially lightening the atmosphere following a defeat to Atalanta in the Champions League that had stretched the team's drought without a win to four matches.
Yet, when asked about Gusto's assist and overall display, Maresca unexpectedly shared his frustration over the preceding two days within the club.
"How the lads want to learn has been fantastic and this is the reason why I praise them - because with so many problems, they are excelling after a tricky week," he commented.
"From the moment I arrived at the club, the last 48 hours have been the toughest because several people withheld support from us."
When pushed further on his meaning, the ex- Leicester City manager continued: "Worst 48 hours since I joined the club because people didn't support me and the team."
When asked if he meant people within at Chelsea, he responded: "In general. In general," before clarifying when asked if it was directed towards supporters or the press: "I adore the fans and we are extremely happy with the fans."
Injury and Suspension Crisis
Maresca also pointed to Chelsea's persistent injury and disciplinary problems, noting they had been missing star attacker Cole Palmer for much of the season, as well as being deprived of key midfielder Moises Caicedo to a three-match ban and forward Liam Delap to a couple of serious injuries.
"I truly applaud the players and the squad because we played 16 Premier League games, 5 of them minus Moises Caicedo, eleven of them without Cole Palmer, almost all of them without Liam Delap," he explained.
"And this squad, no matter who is on the pitch, they are doing fantastic. Today was five games in 12 days so for sure when you see Cole Palmer available, we said many times that he's our top player but we play the vast majority of the season without our best player.
"We play five games in the Premier League minus Moises Caicedo. This is the explanation why I'm so pleased for the players and it's something that I would want people outside to recognize because the effort from the players is remarkable."
Chelsea's win over Everton strengthened their position in 4th place in the Premier League standings, with a Carabao Cup quarter-final clash at Cardiff and a league journey to Newcastle to come next week.
Speculation Regarding Maresca's Remark
It was ambiguous who or what prompted Maresca to label the previous 48 hours as the worst of his time as Chelsea head coach.
In that period, the coach had returned with his staff and players from his native Italy, conducted a training session at the training ground, faced a pre-game press briefing where he appeared at ease, and engineered a win over an high-flying Everton side.
It was unclear whether any specific press stories had irked him, if online discourse were a factor, or if it was something more significant from within the hierarchy at Stamford Bridge.
Maresca only sought to deny that it was an issue involving the club's supporters, some of whom have still have yet to fully embrace him since his appointment from Leicester in July 2024.
